The National Capital Chapter’s autocross program offers nine classes for BMWs. The classes are based on four categories of car modifications and several categories of BMWs based on potential performance. The chapter also offers two classes for non-BMW automobiles. The MINI Cooper is considered a non-BMW.

This category is for BMWs that are as available from the factory. Wheels may be replaced but they must be in a size available as a factory-installed option on the car. Normal wear items including tires, brake pads and rotors, shocks, and mufflers can be replaced with factory original equipment type parts. Adjustable shocks, aftermarket springs, aftermarket seats, and R-compound competition tires are prohibited. Minor appearance items such as wings air dams are allowed as they would not have an influence on performance at autocross speeds. CG-Lock seat belt restraints and short-shift kits are allowed.

There are two performance classes in the Showroom category:

  • Showroom A - M Series cars and the E90/E92 335i
  • Showroom B - Any other BMW

This category allows BMWs with suspension modifications and minor engine modifications. It is intended to allow cars with mostly stock suspension setups to run R-compound competition tires, or non-stock suspension setups to run “street” tires. As such, it is similar to a combination of the SCCA Stock (R tires allowed) and Street Touring (R tires not allowed). NOTE: This means that aftermarket springs cannot be used in conjunction with R-compound tires.

  • Any suspension springs unless using R-compound tires.
  • Any tires (including R-Compounds)
  • Any wheels
  • Any strut tower brace or cross-brace
  • Any cat-back exhaust · Any air intake and filter
  • Any carburetors
  • Any brake pads & rotors
  • Any spoilers or aerodynamic aids
  • Any seats or steering wheel
  • Any aftermarket ECU chip or software

This category is for BMWs with aftermarket suspensions and R-compound tires. If a motor is replaced entirely, then the car will be classed based on the vehicle the motor came from.

For the Prepared and Modified categories, BMWs will be classed based on the following three performance classifications.

This class is for BMWs with all other modifications including forced induction (turbochargers or superchargers), nitrous, internal engine modifications including pistons, camshafts, shaved or ported heads, pure race tires, light weight body panels, and/or stripped interiors.

Also, we have two classes for cars other than BMWs. One will be for cars running without R-compound tires and one for cars with R-compound tires. Results in these classes will not use a performance handicap (PAX), and end-of-season trophies are not awarded.
