June 29, 2003. Mountain Thunder Summer Tour

Cumberland, MD

Mountain Thunder Summer Tour

Sunday, June 29, 2003
Start Location: Park & Ride, Urbana, MD
Time: 8:30 A.M.

This summer tour will be a little different. Instead of traveling the back roads to our destination, we will hit the open highway.  We leave promptly at 8:45 A.M. where we will caravan along the interstates to our destination, the Western Maryland Station in Cumberland.

Once there we will pick up our tickets then travel back through time aboard the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad on the 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0, Mountain Thunder.  From Cumberland, we will climb through the spectacular scenery of the Allegheny.  A narrator will be aboard to provide us with information about the scenery, history and culture along our route.

The Scenic Excursion departs at 11:30 A.M. from the Western Maryland Station.  The train returns to the Station at approximately 3:00 P.M.  There will be a 90 minute layover in Frostburg where you may enjoy lunch, watch them turn the engine on a turntable, wander through the Frostburg Shops By The Depot, investigate the shops and restaurants on Frostburg's Main Street, and visit the Thrasher Carriage Museum.

We will be seated in one of the restored coaches.  Coach seats are all located by large windows and seat two on either side of the aisle.  Seating in the coaches for individuals is not reserved; it is on a first come, first served basis.  Aboard the train there is a gift shop and snack bar, which have been converted from a baggage car.  There are plenty of photo ops at the Cumberland Station, on the excursion, and at Frostburg.  A good time for kids, too.

Reservations must be purchased in advance.  Ticket prices are $19 per adult and $10 per child.  There are a few different choices for lunch.  A sandwich shop is available in Frostburg while they "turn" the engine.  Or you may want to bring a picnic lunch.  Or you can go First Class for $37.50/adult or $17.50/child (which includes the train excursion) and dine in one of the restored dining cars or café car.  First Class passengers are seated at reserved tables and lunch is served aboard the train during the excursion.  A cash bar is also available in each of the dining cars.  Passengers will be given a choice of entree at the time the reservation is made.  All menu selections must be received 24 hours prior to departure time.

To order your tickets, see the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad's ticketing information page, or call 1-800-TRAIN-50.  All tickets are held at the ticket office for pick up the day of your reservation.

On our return trip we will take the local route back home along the Baltimore National Pike.

Please make your reservations early and contact Steven Schlossman to let us know that you will be attending.  If you have FRS radios, bring them along.
